St. Charles, MO—Fairwinds River’s Edge Retirement Community is proud to help the greater community in more ways than one. Starting at the corporate management level in Seattle Washington and continuing into the management and staff at Fairwinds, as well as to the gracious residents that live there, philanthropy is a core belief that they all agree on.

In 2008, Fairwinds started a group called S.W.A.P. (Seniors With A Purpose) for the residents. They had teamed up with Mary Hutchison of the Community Council of St. Charles to help get their efforts off the ground, and have been running full-steam ever since. “Our residents have made hats for homeless, lap afghans for hospice recipients, and they play games with seniors with disabilities at facilities such as Emmaus Homes. We’ve done collection drives for area’s needy children through the Shower of Love and Toys for Tots, and have done collections for our soldiers overseas as well as for the local USO,” stated Jim Ausmus, General Manager at Fairwinds River’s Edge. “Our choir lifts spirits in the greater community by sharing their talents and I am also proud that we are a part of outreach organizations providing food for the homeless.”

Fairwinds started donating meals in 2008 to help feed the homeless. Fairwinds’ Chef Rod Sanders prepares meal donations twice monthly (third Saturday and fourth Sunday), helping feed the twenty-five to thirty individuals that this organization feeds. According to the Community Council, the number of homeless individuals increased by 31% over 2009. The overall economy is continuing to destabilize families with more homeless individuals and families reported than ever. These meals are served every Saturday and Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army. One other way Fairwinds helps the area’s needy is by residents contributing can goods on a weekly basis.

There are a host of other companies that Fairwinds River’s Edge and its residents have contributed to including Habitat for Humanity, MS Walk, Soldiers’ Angels, Crisis Nursery, Love & Hugs, Willow’s Way, Meals on Wheels, local churches and hospitals, and more.
